Plantation Teak

Sustainably harvested from Indonesian plantations, our teak is renowned for its exceptional durability in outdoor conditions. It withstands various weather elements and resists bugs and moisture, ensuring longevity and resilience.

The natural colour of plantation teak varies from region to region due to the unique natural oils found in the soil and surrounding environment. Over time, teak develops a beautiful silvery-grey patina. Alternatively, applying natural teak oil or wax can preserve its original hue, though it will slightly alter the overall appearance.

The inherent strength of teak wood, combined with its naturally high oil content, allows it to weather gracefully while maintaining its integrity, making it an ideal choice for full outdoor use.

Sustainably Harvested Teak Branches

Our teak branches are sustainably harvested from Indonesian plantations, utilizing both discarded branches traditionally overlooked in timber harvesting and young trunks from slower-growing plantation trees. Typically, plantation trees are planted closely together, and the faster-growing trees are retained while the slower-growing ones are removed to allow more space.

These parts of the teak tree contain less heartwood and more sapwood, which is softer, lighter in colour, and absorbs more moisture from the air. For outdoor use, products made from these teak branches should be treated with a surface protector to reduce moisture absorption.

Teak Roots

Sustainably harvested from Indonesian plantations, teak roots are typically considered by-products or waste in traditional timber harvesting. These roots are rich in natural oils and feature a darker grain with an inherently oily texture. Furniture made from teak roots is both sustainable and unique, showcasing the natural, artistic shapes that cannot be replicated by human hands or advanced woodworking machinery.

Reclaimed Aged Teak Finishing

Once harvested, our teak timber is soaked in organic mud, allowing it to absorb natural minerals and colour sediments before being kiln-dried. This process accelerates the appearance of a rustic grey grain, creating a beautiful, weathered finish that typically develops after prolonged exposure to the elements.

Reclaimed Teak

A beautiful aspect of our reclaimed teak pieces is the rich history they carry, from their origins to their transformation into unique furniture.

Reclaimed teak is selectively salvaged from old Javanese buildings, decommissioned fishing boats, or antique rice field ploughs. This wood is then hand-crafted into distinctive furniture pieces.

Decades of exposure to the elements leave teak wood durable and strong, naturally aging the timber and adding unique markings and diverse colour tones to each Uniqwa design. We intentionally preserve these imperfections, allowing our pieces to tell the story of their former life. These features, integral to our design process, highlight the unique qualities of natural materials.

In our collections, we use both refined reclaimed teak and rustic reclaimed teak, each distinguished by the timber's age, texture, and natural oil levels.
